The following vaccinations are optional and also available at the IST Clinic. If in doubt please consult one of the IST medical practitioners.
Measles single vaccination
This is a Measles vaccine without the addition of Mumps and Rubella. It can be given at the age of 9 months and should be repeated at the age of 14 months. Alternatively the MMR can be given at the age 14 months.
Hepatitis A vaccination
Prevents against food+ water borne infections of hepatitis A. This is usually given at around 6 years of age and requires 2 vaccinations: Day 0 and 6 months later
Pneumococcal vaccine ( Prevnar)
For early prevention of respiratory tract infections by pneumococcus. If given below one year of age, three immunizations are required with monthly intervals between vaccinations. If given after the age of one year one vaccination is sufficient.
Meningitis A/C vaccination
This is usually given at the age of 18 months. If given at an earlier age three vaccinations are needed.
Yellow Fever vaccination
This is again required for Tanzania and may be necessary for other countries. It can be given from the age of 9 months onwards. Often we tend to give it later at the age of 18 months. It is valid for 10 years.
Control of yellow fever vaccination status has been resumed at all ports of entry in Tanzania from February 1st 2008 onwards.
Chickenpox ( Varicella-Zoster) vaccination
This is available at the IST Clinic as a single dose vaccination and can be given at the age of one year.
Rabies pre-exposure vaccination
Can be given from the age of 18 months onwards for children with an increased risk of contact with rabies.
Typhoid vaccination
Can be given from the age of two years onwards. It needs to be repeated every 3 years. |
