The novel begins with an uncomfortable—and all-too-familiar—scene when 25-year-old Emira, a Black woman, is accused of kidnapping Briar, the white toddler she is babysitting, in a grocery store late at night. i absolutely adore reese witherspoon and enjoy her book club choices, but this one isnt quite the hit i was expecting it to be, unfortunately. Sara Collins of The Guardian gave the novel a rave review, calling it "the calling card of a virtuoso talent" and writing that it "skillfully interweaves race-related explorations with astute musings on friendship, motherhood, marriage, love and more.

I found myself nodding along to the book’s portrayals of liberal white allyship and the way people often believe their own self-serving narratives. 2.5 stars. It failed miserably on several counts. Such a Fun Age is a much-hyped debut novel from Kiley Reid, and it’s definitely going to be *the* book club book of 2020. The pages fly, relaxed with frequent dialogue and references to social media and paced impeccably by the compelling triangles between Alix, Emira and the various relationships (transactional, romantic) that bind them....The sweet-and-sour spot between heavy and light, a book about difficulty and nuance, specifically regarding class, money, and race." I admittedly probably read it too fast, but my only real disappointment (very small 'd' disappointment) came with part of the ending. Alix wanted to benefit from Emira while validating herself by helping to save a poor Black girl.
The alternative seems to be to let it happen just to seem cool and redeem some of her lost social standing, This drove me nuts!
